How should I behave during a mountain thunderstorm?

If you are surprised by a thunderstorm while you are outdoors, you should be focused on not being the highest point where you are.

  • A hollow, ravine, the bed of a quarry or the foot of a rocky promontory give you a certain amount of protection.
  • Don't hunt for protected areas in a tight group!
  • Do not lean up against rock walls. Crouch down, feet together, and grasp your knees with both arms! If necessary, sit down with your feet close to your body, but whatever happens, do not lie down stretched out. Keep some distance between yourself and others !
  • In barns, wooden or stone huts without any lightning rods, stay in the middle of the structure, again assuming a crouched position.
  • If there is nowhere to take shelter, avoid locations which experience has shown are especially dangerous, such as: isolated trees or groups of trees, mountaintops, hills, lookout towers, supports for overhead power lines, antennas and the like. Keep away from metal fences, gates and other metal structures.
  • Inside a forest of trees that are approximately the same height, you are relatively safe. However, avoid the forest's edge or getting close to particularly tall trees. Crouch in the forest a minimum of around 3 meters from tree trunks and tips of branches - it's best to forego sheltering from the rain under low-hanging branches!
  • It is erroneous to believe that beech and linden trees are less likely to be struck by lightning  than other trees.
